1996 PREP PREVIEW / GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL

Huntington Beach

September 09, 1996

Coaches: Rocky Ciarelli (sixth year) and Cammy Ciarelli (fifth year).

1995: 18-1, 10-0 in the Sunset League; won the league title and were ranked No. 1 in the nation at the end of the season, but lost in the Southern Section Division I quarterfinals to Newport Harbor.

Key returners: Dana Atkinson, 5-9, outside hitter, Sr.; Allison Ciarelli, 5-7, setter, Sr.; Nikki Cross, 5-4, back-row specialist, Sr.; Lori Daedelow, 5-10, middle blocker, Jr.; Stephanie Draeger, 5-9, outside hitter, Sr.; Julie Hinsche, 6-2, middle blocker, Sr.; Alissa Moss, 5-8, setter, Jr.; Lauren Wilson, 5-8, outside hitter, Jr.

Key newcomers: Ashley Ferris, 5-11, middle blocker, Jr.; Denee Ezrins, 6-0, outside hitter, So.

Outlook: For any other program, the loss of all-county players Melissa Wendt and Jill Meyers would have left it shrugging off this season as a rebuilding year. Not the Oilers. They return four other full- or part-time starters from last season. Two-year starter Ciarelli will pace the Oilers and Hinsche and Daedelow are expected to step up in the middle. Atkinson will be a force on the outside.
