Highlights

The Central Division title came down to the final game matching host Saddleback and Rancho Santiago, the preseason favorite. At game time, the fog was so thick that the timer moved from the press box to the field where the game time was kept on a wrist watch. Saddleback, helped greatly by a pair of special-teams touchdowns, rolled to a 36-14 victory. The Gauchos beat Mt. San Antonio, 21-20, two weeks later in the Orange County Simple Green Bowl to finish the season with six consecutive victories for Coach Bill Cunerty, who took over after 14 seasons as an assistant. Saddleback's Scott Patton, a defensive back, was the conference's defensive player of the year. Rancho Santiago went to the Upland Ford Bowl and lost to Chaffey, 27-7. Fullerton, which started the season with only seven sophomores, had victories over Saddleback and Rancho Santiago. Golden West switched to a passing-dominated offense and wide receiver Wesley Morris was one of the most entertaining player to watch. He caught 67 passes for 1,019 yards and six touchdowns. He also averaged 25 yards each on 23 kickoff returns. Orange Coast got an impressive performance from running back William League, who gained 931 yards despite a series of nagging leg injuries.
