Veterans of Lubeck

September 15, 1996

I can't tell you how excited I was to see the familiar outline of the Holstentor on the front page of the travel section of The Times ("Germany's Belle of the Baltic," Aug. 18). I find it the most factual and the most interesting of all the travel articles I have read concerning Lubeck.

I was one of the soldiers of the Army Security Agency stationed in Lubeck from January 1958 until September 1959. Since most of us were then in our early 20s, we weren't much interested in the cultural or historical scene but mostly in the wonderful beer from the local Luck brewery and the lovely Frauleins. This international fraternization produced about six marriages, most still in force today.

We have formed a loosely organized group called the Lubeck Assn. We had a nine-day return to Lubeck in 1987 and plan to return a final time (final for most of us) in 2000. We have a home page on the Internet (http://www.geocities.com/Athens/6369/) and a quarterly newsletter.
