* * Social Distortion, "White Light, White Heat, White Trash," 550 Music.

September 22, 1996|Sandy Masuo

Social Distortion's strong suit has always been the rich dynamic range of its music, which combines raw punk-rock energy with a rootsy, country-style melodiousness. The Orange County band's fifth album features an engaging spectrum of songs. Unfortunately, Michael Beinhorn's tidy, dense production doesn't leave them much breathing room and the album suffers from a chronically claustrophobic feel.
