California running back Tarik Smith, one of the top rushers in the country, faces surgery to repair a serious knee injury and will sit out the rest of the season, team officials said.

An MRI exam revealed Smith tore the anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in his right knee when his leg was bent backward in a pileup during Saturday's 33-15 victory over Nevada.
