Idaho St. Player Paralyzed

September 24, 1996|Associated Press

In what the team doctor called a "freak accident," Idaho State cornerback Marcus Jackson was paralyzed from the neck down in Saturday's victory over Western Montana in Pocatello. The senior was making a tackle when an opposing player's knee hit him in the head.

"He has no feeling beneath approximately the nipple level," Dr. M.R. Mickelson, Idaho State's team doctor, said Monday. Two of Jackson's cervical vertebrae were fractured.

Alabama has likely lost starting linebacker Fernando Davis (torn knee cartilage and ligaments) for the year and tailback Curtis Alexander (broken wrist) for two to three weeks.
