Gas Payments Not Accepted at City Hall

Plans to open a Southern California Gas Co. payment center at City Hall have been scrapped.

The company now has a payment center at the Southern California Edison building on Valencia Drive, a few blocks from City Hall. Because Edison is closing that office, gas company officials had considered opening a payment center at city headquarters, 303 Commonwealth Ave.

The company later changed its plans, though, and is now suggesting that customers pay at either of two other locations in the city: Area Check Cashing, 1127 W. Orangethorpe Ave., or Wilshire Market, 301 N. Richman Ave.

City officials said that some residents have become confused about where to take their payments. One thing is certain, said Chris Meyer, the city's director of administrative services: No payments will be accepted at City Hall.

The drop-off boxes that used to be at City Hall for payment of gas and electric bills have been removed, Meyer said.

"We don't want a lot of people coming down here and being disappointed," he said.
