Plans to relocate the landmark Brea Hotel in a newly created historic district are moving forward.

The City Council has approved a $176,900 contract with Mesa Contracting Corp., which had submitted the lowest bid for the project.

The city plans to create a historic district, called Heritage Block, along Brea Boulevard north of Ash Street. Other structures in the project area are office and residential buildings from the early 1900s.

The Brea Hotel, built in 1910, must be moved back from Brea Boulevard to accommodate a widening of the street. The cost of moving the hotel and remodeling the building to its original condition is estimated at about $1 million, city officials said.
