Governor Signs Two New Bills Aimed at Agents

September 25, 1996

Gov. Pete Wilson this week signed two pieces of legislation aimed at curtailing unscrupulous activity by sports agents.

One bill, AB 1987 by Assemblyman Gary Miller (R-City of Industry), enacts provisions governing the conduct of agents.

The other, SB 1401 by Sen. Ruben Ayala (D-Rancho Cucamonga), prohibits agents from having a financial interest in any entity in the same sport involving any of their clients.

"These bills will provide athletes and educational institutions with a vehicle to recover damages resulting from fines and sanctions from organizations such as the NCAA by expressly allowing them to file civil actions against the real culprits, the unscrupulous agents," Wilson said.
