September 26, 1996| Reuters

MIAMI — Tropical Storm Isidore swiftly gained strength Wednesday in the mid-Atlantic and could become a hurricane, the National Hurricane Center said.

Isidore, the ninth tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, had sustained winds of 65 mph, nearing the threshold of 74 mph at which it would become a hurricane. At its current speed and position, Isidore would not approach the Caribbean for four to five days, forecasters said.
