* Next: Friday vs. Hawthorne at Santa Ana Stadium.

* Update: The Monarchs' defense, which figured to be their weak spot this season, hasn't been scored on in two games. In a 37-0 victory over Long Beach Jordan last Friday, Mater Dei gave up only 30 yards and had six sacks.

2. LA PUENTE BISHOP AMAT, 2-0 (2)

* Next: Friday vs. La Palma Kennedy.

* Update: The Lancers improved their unbeaten steak to 11 games with a 17-14 victory over Redlands. Bishop Amat, which rallied from a 14-3 deficit in the fourth quarter, scored the winning touchdown on a 39-yard pass play to Joey Getherall with 2:11 to play.

3. LOYOLA, 2-0 (3)

* Next: Friday vs. Saugus at College of the Canyons.

* Update: The Cubs have outscored opponents, 85-19. In a 37-12 victory over Mira Costa, they scored on their first three possessions.

4. MISSION VIEJO CAPISTRANO VALLEY, 2-0 (5)

* Next: Friday vs. Foothill at Tustin High.

* Update: Running back Malaefou MacKenzie made a name for himself in a 34-0 victory over Edison. He gained 96 of his 127 yards on a touchdown run in the first quarter. He sat out the second half because of a sore right ankle.

5. COMPTON DOMINGUEZ, 2-0 (10)

* Next: Friday vs. Compton Centennial.

* Update: Although they have only 37 players on the varsity, the Dons showed they belong among the elite teams with a 36-6 rout of Eisenhower.

6. PALOS VERDES PENINSULA, 2-0 (6)

* Next: Friday at Mira Costa.

* Update: The Panthers held off a bruising Narbonne team, 24-6, in last week's featured contest.

7. LOS ALAMITOS, 2-0 (7)

* Next: Friday vs. Loara at Western High.

* Update: Without their top two quarterbacks, the Griffins struggled in a 27-14 victory over L.A. Washington. Sophomore Ryan Hanson got the call after starter Sean Stein was sidelined because of back spasms and backup Zack Blazek sprained an ankle.

8. LONG BEACH POLY, 1-1 (8)

* Next: Friday vs. Muir at Pasadena City College.

* Update: Sophomore quarterback Chris Lewis rebounded from a tough opener by completing 12 of 14 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns in a 44-6 victory over Banning.

9. LANCASTER ANTELOPE VALLEY, 2-0 (9)

* Next: Friday at Sylmar.

* Update: In a 40-14 victory over Barstow, David Aranzubia kicked three field goals, including a 50-yarder.

10. FONTANA, 1-0-1 (14)

* Next: Tonight vs. Bloomington at University of Redlands.

* Update: After scoring only three points in the opener, the Steelers bounced back with a 37-20 victory at Fresno Clovis West.

11. ANAHEIM SERVITE, 2-0 (11)

* Next: Friday vs. Santa Margarita at Saddleback College.

* Update: The Friars breathed a sigh of relief when quarterback Greg Cicero started and played in a 35-19 victory over Irvine. Cicero, who is right-handed, had injured his throwing hand the week before.

12. BELLFLOWER ST. JOHN BOSCO, 1-0-1 (13)

* Next: Friday vs. Marina.

* Update: The Braves rebounded from a disappointing tie with Eisenhower by defeating Grossmont of San Diego, 30-7.

13. REDLANDS, 1-1 (12)

* Next: Friday vs. Cajon at University of Redlands.

* Update: Coach Jim Walker stressed special teams in practice this week after a muffed kickoff and punt proved costly in a 17-14 loss to Bishop Amat.

14. THOUSAND OAKS, 2-0 (NR)

* Next: Friday at Chaminade.

* Update: The Lancers pulled off a 36-35 victory over Hart after rallying from 21-point, fourth-quarter deficit.

15. SHERMAN OAKS NOTRE DAME, 2-0 (15)

* Next: Friday vs. Beverly Hills.

* Update: The Knights ran for 431 yards and five touchdowns in a 37-14 victory over Burbank Burroughs.

16. RIVERSIDE RUBIDOUX, 2-0 (16)

* Next: Friday vs. Rialto.

* Update: Leo Brouhard, who coached Rubidoux from 1978-85, had little luck in his first game against his former team. Valley View, where Brouhard currently coaches, lost to the Falcons, 36-23.

17. WOODLAND HILLS TAFT, 2-0 (17)

* Next: Friday at Dorsey.

* Update: Nick DiPadova passed for three touchdowns and rushed for two more in a 51-0 victory over Fairfax.

18. NEWHALL HART, 1-1 (4)

* Next: Friday at Westlake.

* Update: Travis Carroll passed for 234 yards and three touchdowns in a 36-35 loss to Thousand Oaks. But his failure to take a safety late in the game resulted in a Thousand Oaks touchdown with two seconds remaining.

19. SAN PEDRO, 2-0 (NR)

* Next: Friday vs. University at Daniels Field.

* Update: The Pirates turned the ball over six times but still had little trouble beating Hamilton, 41-6.

20. NORCO, 2-0 (20)

* Next: Friday at Colton.

* Update: The Cougars won their eighth consecutive game over Riverside Arlington, 27-7, in a nonleague contest.

* DROPPED OUT: No. 18 Narbonne (1-1), lost to Peninsula, 24-6; No. 19 Ayala (1-1) lost to Esperanza, 35-32.

* OTHER TOP TEAMS: Muir (2-0), Esperanza (1-1), Narbonne (1-1), Diamond Bar (2-0), Westlake (2-0), El Toro (2-0), Bloomington (2-0), Newbury Park (2-0), Long Beach Wilson (2-0) and Covina (2-0).
