CHILE : President Replaces Advisor, 4 Ministers

September 28, 1996|From Times Wire Reports

President Eduardo Frei replaced top political advisor Genaro Arriagada and four other Cabinet ministers in a shake-up only a month before nationwide municipal elections. Frei asked for the resignations of his entire Cabinet and accepted those of Arriagada and the ministers of education, agriculture, planning, and transport and communications, presidential spokesman Jose Joaquin Brunner said. Local media had expected a reshuffle this week, partly to give a fresher image to Frei's center-left coalition government before nationwide municipal elections on Oct. 27.
