September 29, 1996|SCOTT STEEPLETON

A 19-year-old man lost his wallet and his car during a carjacking early Saturday in Simi Valley.

The theft occurred at 12:19 a.m. at a convenience store in the 1800 block of Cochran Street. A man pointed a chrome handgun at Vince Chairenza of Simi Valley as he talked on a pay phone and demanded his wallet, Simi Valley Police Sgt. John McGinty said.

The carjacker then went for Chairenza's 1990 Ford Mustang, which had been left running nearby.

The carjacker drove off in the car and was last seen heading north on Erringer Road. He was being followed by an accomplice in a second vehicle, McGinty said.

The victim was not hurt.

Police are still looking for the carjacker, his accomplice and the stolen car, which is valued at $9,000.
