Ford Motor Co. will pay $40 million for the right to name a domed stadium proposed for the Lions in downtown Detroit.
The name of the stadium will remain a mystery, possibly for several months. The company may sponsor a naming contest.
The Lions want to build their stadium near a proposed open-air ballpark for the Detroit Tigers. Both would be part of a planned $485-million, 40-acre complex centered around the Fox Theatre district.
But two obstacles loom. By Nov. 1, the Lions must acquire land for the stadium and also persuade private industry to contribute $10 million.
Chicago quarterback Erik Kramer should know in a few days if the two herniated disks in his neck will end his season--and maybe his football career. Dave Wannstedt, coach of the Bears, said Kramer will spend much of the weekend talking with team orthopedist Michael Schafer, who in turn will be conferring with out-of-town specialists who examined Kramer on Wednesday and Thursday.
