November 01, 1996|From Times Wire Reports

Liberia's chief warlord, Charles Taylor, escaped an assassination attempt in Monrovia, the capital. Gunmen opened fire on his entourage as it arrived for a meeting of the interim government, said Nigerian Gen. Victor Malu, head of a multinational African peacekeeping force deployed in Liberia. Taylor's bodyguard and at least two others were killed in the attack, which raised fears of renewed warfare in the capital.
