Ailing Dissident Freed From Prison

November 07, 1996|From Times Wire Reports

China released dissident Chen Ziming, who has cancer, from prison in an apparent bid to appease the United States two weeks before a visit by Secretary of State Warren Christopher. The release of Chen, 44, an organizer of the 1989 pro-democracy demonstrations in Tiananmen Square, follows the sentencing of another dissident, Wang Dan, last week to an 11-year prison term. Chen's family had appealed for his release so he could seek treatment for cancer and other ailments.
