November 07, 1996|From Times Wire Reports

In a major step toward peace in Cambodia, nearly 1,000 former Khmer Rouge guerrillas were inducted into the government army. The guerrillas belonged to a Khmer Rouge faction that split from its hard-line leadership in August to seek peace with the government. According to figures provided by the defecting forces, 2,507 fighters officially joined the government side. The Khmer Rouge was responsible for mass killings in the 1970s.
