Jet Rudder Controls OK, Boeing Says

November 09, 1996|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Tests on 1,400 Boeing 737 jetliners show no failure in rudder power control units, the manufacturer said, after it had called for the tests because a rudder control valve jammed in a laboratory experiment. Seattle-based Boeing began testing its 2,700 jets after the Federal Aviation Administration ordered the emergency tests. The 737's rudder system has been under scrutiny because of the unsolved crashes of a United Airlines 737 near Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1991, and a USAir 737 near Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1994.
