The inaugural USSTA Southern California Soft Tennis Championship will be held at the Calabasas Park Tennis Club today and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Admission is free.

The tournament has $2,000 in prize money.

Soft tennis, a miniature version of tennis, is played with smaller rackets and a spongy ball. It is reportedly played by seven million people in Japan.

The tournament will be directed by former Pierce College Coach Paul Xanthos.


The scout teams of the Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates will play today at 11 a.m. at Pote Field in Griffith Park. The teams are comprised mostly of top high school players.

High school events today include:

Cross-country: At 7:30 a.m., Southern Section Prelims at Mt. San Antonio College.

Girls' tennis: Southern Section team playoffs. At 2 p.m., Division I: Santa Barbara at Crescenta Valley, Camarillo at Thousand Oaks; Division II: Beverly Hills at Rio Mesa; Division III: Temple City at Westlake, Burroughs at St. Lucy's, Harvard-Westlake at Garden Grove; Division IV: Chaminade at La Canada, Calabasas at San Luis Obispo; Division V: Buckley at Brentwood, Santa Ynez at St. Bonaventure, Cate at Thacher.

Girls' volleyball: Southern Section playoffs. At 5 p.m., Division II-A: Westlake at San Marcos; Division III-A: Rosary at La Canada. At 7 p.m., Division II-AA: Royal at Newport Harbor; Division I-A: Thousand Oaks at Saugus; Division III-AA: Notre Dame Academy at Alemany; Division III-A: San Marino at Harvard-Westlake, Notre Dame at San Luis Obispo; Division IV-AA: Flintridge Sacred Heart at Paloma Valley, La Reina at Santa Ynez; Division IV-A: Mayfield at Bell-Jeff; Division V-AA: Flintridge Prep at Lucerne Valley; Division V-A: Cornerstone Christian at Cuyama Valley.

College events in the region include:

Men's basketball: At 7:30 p.m., Fresno Pacific at The Master's.

Women's basketball: At 7 p.m., Fullerton at Canyons, Rio Hondo at Oxnard.

Swimming: At noon, Pomona-Pitzer, San Diego State at Pepperdine.

Women's volleyball: At 7 p.m., St. Mary's at Pepperdine.
