Whittier Christian Beats Calvary Chapel for First Victory

COSTA MESA — Whittier Christian recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for the deciding touchdown in a 12-6 Olympic League victory over Calvary Chapel Friday at Orange Coast College.

With 3 minutes 12 seconds left in the game, Josh Stofle recovered the blocked punt and broke a 6-6 tie, giving the Heralds (1-9, 1-4 in league) their first victory of the season.

In the third quarter, Daniel Murrieta intercepted a Chris Vanderhook pass giving the Eagles the ball at the Heralds' 11, but Calvary Chapel's possession ended with a missed field goal. In the fourth quarter, The Eagles (0-9-1, 0-5) had a 75-yard touchdown pass nullified by a penalty.

In the first half, an interception by Calvary Chapel's Keith Short ended a Whittier Christian threat. The Heralds also had a 72-yard run called back.

The Heralds scored first when Vanderhook found Stofle in the end zone for a 33-yard touchdown pass. They led 6-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Eagles tied the score on a 46-yard drive, scoring on a one-yard run by Steve Hernandez.
