Woodbridge senior forward Chris Burgess is expected to orally commit to Brigham Young University today at a 6 p.m. news conference at the high school, several college basketball sources said Sunday night.
Burgess, 6 feet 11 and 242 pounds, had recently narrowed his choices to BYU and Duke. Along with parents, Ken and Sandi, Burgess, rated the second-best high school basketball player nationally in this recruiting class, on Sunday decided BYU was the winner, a source in Utah said.
When contacted by phone at his home, Ken said his son was still undecided.
"To be honest, I'm leaning toward Duke. I guess the best thing I can say is that we just need to go [to the news conference] and see what Chris says," Ken said
However, a Southland-based recruiting source also confirmed that Burgess is BYU bound.
Burgess, who led the county in scoring last season with a 26.3 average, would be among the highest-profile recruits in BYU basketball history, a recruiting analyst said.
"He's the best all-around big man I've seen in this class," said Bob Gibbons of North Carolina-based All-Star Sports Publications.
As a sophomore, Burgess averaged averaged 21.9 points and 11.4 rebounds, tops in the county.
