Saddleback

December 04, 1996

Coach: Mel Silva (10th year).

1995-96: 15-7-2, 7-3 in the Golden West League; lost to Capistrano Valley, 3-2, in first round of Southern Section Division I playoffs.

Key returners: Cesar Flores, forward, 10 goals last year, Sr.; Alex Licea, midfielder-forward, So.; Jose Retiz, midfielder, Jr.; Efrain Rodriguez, goalkeeper, Jr.; Joseph Tagaloa, forward, starting fullback on football team, Jr.; Alex Serrano, midfielder, Jr.; Thomas Serna, 20 goals, forward, Jr.

Key newcomers: Carlos Castellon, halfback, Jr.; Jose Carreon, goalkeeper, So.; Danny Magdaleno, fullback, Jr.; Oscar Retiz, sweeper, So.; Sergio Sanchez, fullback, Jr.; Abel Serrano, midfielder, So.

Outlook: Silva has never been past the section semifinals, but this could be the year he reaches the final. The Roadrunners won the Orange County Summer League and have six starters back from last year's playoff team. "At times last year, we played so well that we could beat anybody," Silva said. "But our inexperience caught up with us. The loss to Capo woke us up." The top two returners are Serna and Retiz. "Those two are going to create headaches for people," he said.
