December 06, 1996

Chris Czernek of Newbury Park High is the first quarterback in the nation to pass for 4,000 yards in more than one season.

Czernek, a 5-foot-11 senior, passed for a Ventura County-record 462 yards Friday in his final game to finish with 4,039 for the season and 9,840 for his career. He passed for a state-record 4,360 yards in 1995 and 1,441 in '94.

Czernek's career total is second on the all-time state list to Keith Smith, who passed for 9,971 yards for Newbury Park in 1991-93.

With Smith and Czernek doing the bulk of the passing, Newbury Park has passed for 20,418 yards in the past six seasons.

Czernek finished second on the state all-time list in passes attempted (1,128) and fourth in completions (630).
