Even if you don't actually increase your debt load, it is possible to lower your credit rating in other ways. Borrowers use point systems that often take into account a variety of factors, such as how long you've been at a single address or home--an indicator of stability. Often considered is how often you have simply asked for a credit card--regardless of whether you actually got the card or ever used it.
