HIGH SCHOOLS : Greco Gets Jump on Raising Game

December 22, 1996

The Crescenta Valley High girls' basketball team has picked up where it left off. And so has Michelle Greco.

The Falcons, who lost to Buena, 78-50, in last season's Southern Section Division I-A semifinals, are 7-0.

Greco, a junior forward who averaged 17.3 points last season, is averaging 25 points. She scored a season-high 34 points against San Marino.

"She's got a jump shot now," Coach Marc Ward said. "We worked on it all season."

He's the boss: After eight seasons, Agoura High assistant boys' basketball coach Bill Sanchez took a year off last season to "recharge his batteries."

Good thing, because Sanchez got more than he bargained for. Sanchez originally came back to become co-coach with Kevin Pasky. That changed earlier this semester when Pasky decided to take a year off from coaching.

"There's a lot of things you don't have to worry about when you're the assistant," Sanchez said. "Now I've got practices, bus schedules, parents. It's all a little overwhelming at times."

Silent treatment: It pains John Goffredo to raise his voice. But it pains him even more not to raise it.

Goffredo has coached the Crescenta Valley boys' basketball team to the playoffs 16 times in 18 years. But he has been forced to remain quiet this season while the Falcons have stumbled to a 3-3 start.

Goffredo is under doctor's orders to keep cool. He is scheduled to undergo surgery for a hernia next week.

"It [stinks]," Goffredo said. "I can't yell at games. I can't coach."
