Phil Donahue has been lobbying for public executions for years. Well, he has finally got one. Wayne Fontes makes his final appearance as Lions' head coach unless Detroit owner William Clayton Ford wants to open himself up to a competency hearing.

--Say what: The game lost its meaning when Carolina defeated Pittsburgh, depriving the 49ers the chance to back into the NFC West title.

--Player to watch: Detroit quarterback Scott Mitchell. He has been dreadful, and he's a free agent next season.

--Finally: Count how many times the ABC cameras focus on the befuddled Fontes on the Lions' sidelines. Guess here is 18.
