Reebok Sues TriStar Over 'Jerry Maguire'

December 25, 1996|Times Staff and Wire Reports

Reebok International Ltd. said it filed a lawsuit against Sony Corp.'s TriStar Pictures Inc. unit for not including a Reebok commercial in its recently released "Jerry Maguire" film. The lawsuit, filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in the Central District of California, seeks at least $10 million in damages for each of 12 claims, including breach of contract, trademark infringement and negligent misrepresentation. Reebok is also seeking an unspecified amount of punitive damages for some of the claims. The Stoughton, Mass.-based maker of footwear and clothing spent about $1.5 million to produce a commercial for use in the film, run a promotion in Reebok stores, and provide some of its products for the movie, said Dave Fogelson, a Reebok spokesman. Sony later broke an agreement to write the commercial into the plot, he said.
