Today's Wild-card Playoff

December 29, 1996

PHILADELPHIA (10-6) at SAN FRANCISCO (12-4)

Channel 11, 1 p.m.

* STORYLINE: The winner will go to Green Bay next week. The loser's name will be mud. But then, so will the winner's. Up to 10 inches of rain is expected in the Bay Area by Monday morning, with much of it expected to fall this afternoon at Candlestick Park.

* PHILADELPHIA UPDATE: The return of Ricky Watters and Ray Rhodes will spice up this one. Watters, who finished second in the NFC with 1,411 rushing yards, will face his former teammates for the first time since leaving via free agency. Watters scored three touchdowns in San Francisco's 49-26 victory over San Diego in Super Bowl XXIX. The Eagles are making their second postseason appearance in as many years under Rhodes, who earned five Super Bowl rings as an assistant with the 49ers. Ty Detmer replaced an injured Rodney Peete early in the season and led the Eagles to a 7-4 record.

* SAN FRANCISCO UPDATE: While Watters has rushed for 2,684 yards in two years with the Eagles, the 49ers have had problems establishing a running game. Derek Loville led San Francisco with 743 rushing yards in 1995 and Terry Kirby paced the team with only 559 yards on the ground this season. Quarterback Steve Young sat out all or parts of eight games this season because of two concussions and a groin injury, but he still led the NFL with a quarterback rating of 97.2. Jerry Rice led the league with 108 receptions for 1,254 yards. Rice will match up against Philadelphia's cornerback tandem of Bobby Taylor and Troy Vincent. The 49ers are playing a wild-card game for the first time since 1985.

* THE LINE: San Francisco by 10 1/2
