'Vital' Skills Taught at Valencia High

February 12, 1997|JOHN POPE and JENNIFER LEUER and JOHN CANALIS

Valencia High School students are in for some life lessons this semester.

The school has begun offering a new class, called Vital Link, designed to ease the transition from high school to the workplace.

Students will learn career skills like group participation, conflict resolution, problem solving and computer applications, said teacher Donna Becker, who organized the class. Each student will also work with a mentor from his or her chosen career field, she said.

The idea stemmed from Vital Link-Orange County, which helps schools set up business partnerships to teach students skills that employers desire.

"It increases their awareness of how the classes they take here relate to the workplace," Becker said.
