Pamela Harriman

February 14, 1997

I just read your Feb. 6 articles on the late Pamela Harriman, and I was wondering what exactly were her qualifications for becoming an ambassador to France. She had many husbands and lovers among the rich and famous, she was a courtesan, a "geisha girl" to the powerful, born to European aristocracy, and oh, yes, she spoke French.

In my neighborhood, Mrs. Harriman's activity would have warranted a lot less than an international post to France, or two articles in The Times to tell about it.
