1997 PREP GOLF / Preview | SIX TEAMS TO WATCH

University

March 05, 1997

Coach: Craig Huff (12th year).

1996: 13-5, 5-5 in the Pacific Coast; finished third in the Southern Regional and 10th at the Southern Section team championship.

Key returners: Joey Chang, So.; Chris Kugel, So.; Ron Won, So.

Key newcomers: Branden Fella, So.; Ryan Miller, Fr.; Jed Santa Maria, Jr., Brian Sinay, Fr.

Outlook: University's oldest player is a junior and he played junior varsity last year, but with the strongest group of freshmen and sophomores in the county, the Trojans are certainly set for the future. They could do some damage this year as well. Won and Chang were all-league performers as freshmen and Kugel is coming on strong. Add to that Sinay, an accomplished junior player who is perhaps the best freshman in the county, and the consistent Miller, and University should challenge some of the best. Huff has no doubt his team will be working hard toward that goal. "In my experience these kids are the most focused group of young men," Huff said. "We lack depth and we are still hoping for one of the last year's JV players to step up and fill that sixth spot."
