1997 BOYS SWIMMING AND DIVING / PREVIEW | SIX TEAMS
TO WATCH

Los Alamitos

March 06, 1997

Coach: Tony Martinho (sixth year).

1996: 10-0, 5-0 in the Sunset League; finished second to Marina in the league finals and 10th at the Southern Section Division I finals.

Key returners: James Ahn , Jr.; Mike Harrelson, So.; Dave Kong, Jr.; John Pearce, Sr.; Breh Walker, Sr.

Key newcomers: Derek Bradley, Jr.; A.J. Butler, Jr.; Chris Harrelson, Fr.

Outlook: Although Los Alamitos doesn't have a lot of club swimmers on its team, Martinho says he still thinks the Griffins can keep up with the best and go undefeated in league again. "We have lots of depth and some real talent on this team," he said. Loaded with breaststrokers, the Griffins are led by Mike Harrelson, who took third in the 100 breaststroke at the section finals. Also expected to turn in some good breaststroke times are Kong, who placed sixth at the section finals. Harrelson can also swim the 200 IM (he was sixth at the section finals). Pearce should give the Griffins some stability at freestyle, where he swims the 100 and 200. He will be especially vital in the relays.
