1997 Boys' Tennis / Preview | Six Team To Watch

Corona del Mar

March 08, 1997

Coach: Tim Mang (fifth year).

1996: 20-3, 10-0 in league, lost to Palos Verdes Peninsula in Southern Section Division I semifinals.

Key returners: John Cappello, No. 1 or 2 singles, Sr.; Sameer Chopra, doubles, So.; Greg Coleman, doubles, Sr.; Reza Jahangiri, doubles, Sr.

Key newcomers: Curtis Ellmore, singles/doubles, transfer from Utah, So.; Drew Fuller, doubles, Jr.; Chris Jensen, singles, transfer from Aspen, Colo., So.; Egan Mozeyani, doubles, Jr.; Sam Shahmardi, doubles, So.; Cameron Taylor, singles/doubles, Foothill transfer, Jr.

Outlook: Mang won't have the kind of team he had a month ago--No. 1 and No. 2 singles players Taylor Dent and Boris Turkich are pursuing other tennis interests and aren't in school. But the Sea Kings still will be formidable. How much depends largely on Taylor, Ellmore and Jensen and how quickly they adapt to the rigors of Sea View League tennis. Corona del Mar probably doesn't have the singles talent to challenge Woodbridge for the league title but it might have enough depth to knock off many of the county's top teams and create some havoc in the playoffs.
