STATE WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Calvary Chapel Breaks Its Record

March 09, 1997

STOCKTON — Santa Ana Calvary Chapel not only defended its title Saturday at the state wrestling championships, but the Eagles set a record in team points.

By midday Saturday at the University of the Pacific, the Eagles had already surpassed their 1994 record of 120 1/2 points by eight points. They finished with 136 1/2 points to win their fourth state title in five years.

San Jose Independence finished second with 74, followed by Shingle Springs Ponderosa with 73 1/2.

In front of an announced 7,000, Calvary Chapel put the icing on the cake in the championship round.

Senior Joe Calavitta won his second consecutive state title against Kirk Moore of Bakersfield Foothill. Ty Wilcox had little difficulty in defending his title, winning his 160-pound match against Telly Sanders of Clovis Buchanan, 12-3. Calvary Chapel's other finalist, Burt Pierson, lost to defending state champion Carlos Blanco of Riverside Canyon Springs.
