Man Dies of Wounds From Shootout With Bank Guard

March 22, 1997

SANTA ANA — The gunman involved in Wednesday's fatal shootout with a security guard at an Eldorado bank branch in Orange was identified Friday as a former card dealer whose last known address was in Las Vegas.

James B. Butler died about 12:30 a.m. Friday at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana after undergoing surgery. He had suffered a bullet wound to the chest and had collapsed in the bank parking lot. He never regained consciousness.

Butler fatally shot Michael McClellan, 54, a retired Long Beach police officer who had been hired by the bank after it was robbed three times.

Police believe Butler committed three previous robberies at the bank. The FBI has also linked him to two other Orange County bank robberies.
