You Can Waver--It'll Remain Steadfast

March 25, 1997|LYNN SIMROSS | SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Even the steadiest hands shake using binoculars, especially viewing long sporting events or watching birds for hours at a time. But that's not a problem with Canon's Image Stabilization models, the 12x36 IS and the 15x45 IS.

These compact binoculars have a built-in electronic optical image stabilizer that creates shake-free viewing of objects when you depress a small button on the top. Canon developed the technology for its video cams, then decided to expand optical image stabilization to two models of binoculars.

Both models operate on two AA batteries and are lightweight, weighing 31 ounces and 37 ounces respectively. Canon's 12x36 IS costs about $700; 15x45 IS, $1,800 to $2,000. For more information, call (800) OK-CANON.

Growth Factor: Gardeners will want to check out Preen 'n Green, "smart" garden granules that are a combination fertilizer and weed preventive. The unusual formula has a broad range of uses, designed for most flowering plants, shrubs and some vegetables.

From Greenview in Lebanon, Pa., Preen 'n Green comes in a single canister with a built-in applicator. Company reps say you can sprinkle the formula around the garden before or after you plant the plants and vegetables, and the combo fertilizer and weed preventive will work for three months.

For more information on Preen 'n Green (6 1/4-pound containers retail for about $12) call (800) 233-0626.

More for Gardeners: Yardwork can be simplified with Ryobi's multi-functional Trimmer Plus, a tool with an array of add-on attachments that fit on the trimmer's shaft and are secured by an oversized knob.

The Trimmer Plus' engine--either electric or gas--powers all the attachments. Available are a string trimmer, edger, cultivator, tree pruner, snow thrower and brush cutter; new this season are a hedge trimmer, mulching blower-vac and an improved blower. All attachments come with hangers so they can be easily stored on a garage wall.

Trimmer Plus ranges from $75 for the electric model to $115 for the two-cycle engine to $199 for the four-cycle. Attachments retail from $30 to $100. Call Ryobi at (800) 345-8746.
