School Funding Ruled Unlawful

March 25, 1997|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Ohio's system of funding public schools, in which rich districts spend far more per student than poorer districts, is unconstitutional, the state Supreme Court declared. The 4-3 ruling, handed down in Columbus, came in a 1991 lawsuit filed by a coalition representing most of the state's school districts. Differences in property values and wealth result in annual per-pupil spending ranging from $4,000 to $12,000 per student.
