Valley Blast Ousted in Dallas Cup

March 28, 1997

The Valley United Blast, a boys' under-17 club soccer team comprised of area standouts, was eliminated Thursday in pool play at the prestigious Dallas Cup international tournament.

The Blast defeated the Texas Lightning, 2-0, Monday on goals by Marvin Quijano (Reseda High) and Chad Schutt (Camarillo).

Wednesday, the Blast lost to Mexico City Pumas, 1-0, after surrendering a penalty shot.

Thursday, the Blast defeated Pittsburgh, 5-1, with goals by Patrick Thomsen (Notre Dame), Danny Sable (Harvard-Westlake), Schutt, Adam Liberman and Aaron Benditson (Oak Park).

Blast goalkeeper Juan Plascencia (Notre Dame) made 11 saves in the three matches.

Mexico City Pumas was the only team to advance out of the Blast's four-team pool.

Matador acquitted: Cal State Northridge running back Jahi Arnold, who had been charged with assaulting his girlfriend while he was a student at Iowa State in December, was acquitted by a jury Thursday in Story County Municipal Court in Iowa.

Arnold transferred to Northridge in January. Although he has not earned a scholarship, coaches have been impressed with him in spring workouts.

Talking head: The JetHawks have added former KABC television reporter and weekend weatherman Rick DeReyes to their radio broadcasting team. DeReyes will join veteran announcer Dan Hubbard.
