The city is seeking a state grant to place a special material made of recycled tires at five park playgrounds to make them safer and more accessible to disabled children.

The City Council approved a grant application to the California Integrated Waste Management Board for $25,000. The city will contribute $33,400 toward the project to buy the pour-in-place covering material.

Parks targeted for the program are Jaycee Parkette, Koch Park, Parque de Los Ninos, Tri City Park and Tuffree Hill Park.

The grant is competitive. The city will be notified this month if it will receive the money.

A half-dozen other city parks already have the recycled material on playgrounds.
