Jimmy Smith to Lead Jazz at Wadsworth

May 02, 1997

Jazz organist Jimmy Smith leads an all-star group in a free concert as part of the Jazz at the Wadsworth series at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Performing with Smith will be Herman Riley on reeds, Phil Upchurch on guitar and Frank Wilson on drums.

The program will be presented in association with "Festival/Organ: King of Instruments," an exhibit at UCLA's Fowler Museum running through May 18.

Smith, who defined the contemporary approach to jazz organ playing in the '50s and '60s, also recorded a number of crossover hit albums in the mid-'60s, including "Bashin'," "Hobo Flats" and "The Cat."

Jazz at the Wadsworth, now in its 13th season and one of the Southland's most popular free concert series, presents programs on the first Sunday of every month at 7 p.m. Doors open for the Smith concert at 6:30 p.m.

No tickets or reservations are necessary. The Veterans Wadsworth Theater is at 226 Eisenhower Ave. in Brentwood.
