Galaxy update--Having lost four of its first five games, two by shootout, the Galaxy is struggling to find offensive firepower. Helping matters tonight, perhaps, will be the return of Eduardo Hurtado from World Cup qualifying duty with Ecuador. Also returning, after helping Guatemala finish second in the Central American championship, is midfielder Martin Machon. On the negative side, playmaker Mauricio Cienfuegos has left to rejoin El Salvador for its World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica on Sunday, and winger Cobi Jones has been out for a week because of an injured right hamstring. This is the first of two games in three days for the Galaxy, which also plays the New York/New Jersey MetroStars at Giants Stadium on Sunday. Defender Robin Fraser is expected to return after sitting out three games because of injury.

United update--After starting the season with four victories, Washington was defeated, 3-2, in a shootout by the San Jose Clash last Saturday after leading, 2-0, at the half. It was the United's first MLS loss in nine games, a streak that included a shootout victory at Los Angeles after a scoreless tie in the '97 season opener for both teams. United forward Jaime Moreno of Bolivia has scored a goal in four consecutive games and has assisted on two others but is listed as questionable because of a right ankle sprain. Striker Raul Diaz Arce has scored six goals in three games but, like the Galaxy's Cienfuegos, will miss tonight's game after rejoining El Salvador's national team.
