INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Largest Financial Institutions

The differences between financial institutions is increasingly blurring as competition from mutual fund and brokerage firms changes the landscape of such servies.

But important differences remain. This chart looks at asset sizes among federally insured banks and "thrifts," which is generally defined as savings and loan institutions and "savings banks" that operate like S&Ls. It does not cover credit unions, several of which would make this list if they were included. The federal government has increasingly reduced the legal differences among these institutions, with the next step, coming June 1, easing interstate banking (although some states will still limit expansion.)

Despite dramatic changes, thrifts still generally concentrate on residential mortgage loans, while banks focus more on commercial and consumer loans.

Thrifts may be owned by a commercial enterprise through a holding company; banks cannot be owned by a commercial enterprise.

Thrifts, through subsidiaries, may engage in a wider range of financial activities than banks.
