Yanagisawa, Morris Win Pro Golf Event

Will Yanagisawa, a former UC Irvine standout, teamed with Chad Morris to win the best ball Simple Green Tour event Monday at Coyote Hills Golf Club in Fullerton.

The pair tied at seven-under 63 with Mike McMonegal and Chris Blackmun but won on the first playoff hole.

Yanagisawa and Morris split $1,600 and McMonegal and Blackmun split $1,000.

Brad Gallagher and Mike Sugar, another former UC Irvine player, tied for third with Jason Follen and Ryan Wellborn at 64. Each team split $200.

Bob Chavez, walk-on boys' soccer coach at El Toro High, has resigned, Athletic Director John Johansen said Monday. Applicants for the position must file by May 19.

Georgia Tech's Anne Knobbe, a former Brea Olinda softball player, has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference rookie of the year.

Knobbe started 52 of 54 games at catcher. She batted .319 with 25 runs batted in and a conference-best four home runs during the regular season. She threw out 22 runners attempting to steal.

Christa Ellis, a 5-11 forward at Los Alamitos, signed a letter of intent to attend Cal State Los Angeles next year, Griffins basketball Coach Mike Ford said.
