Santa Ana Valley Defeats No. 8 Foothill

Jesse Gomez's two-run double highlighted a three-run fifth inning as Santa Ana Valley upset eighth-ranked Foothill, 7-6, Thursday in a Century League baseball game.

Foothill (18-5, 12-1) plays ninth-ranked Canyon on Tuesday and Thursday next week in a series that will decide the Century League title.

Santa Ana Valley (11-12, 4-9) lost its other two games to the Knights this season by 10-run margins 10-0, 15-5.

In the Olympic League:

Brethren Christian 6, Calvary Chapel 3--Jonathan Rouwenhorst (10-0) struck out nine to increase his county-leading total to 130 for Brethren Christian (17-6, 10-3), which moved within a game of first-place Calvary Chapel (13-9, 11-2).

In Freeway League boys' track and field finals:

Troy wins--Troy, the dual-meet champion, also took the league finals, scoring 152 points to outdistance Sunny Hills (125). John West of third-place Sonora was named athlete of the meet by virtue of winning the 400 (49.92) and 800 (2:02.44) and leading off the winning 1,600 relay team. Troy was led by Kyion Grayes, who won the 200 and the long jump.

In the Empire League finals:

Katella wins with ease--Charles Crook won the 100 with a time of 10.7 seconds, the 200 in 21.5 and ran a leg on the winning 400 and 1,600 relay teams for Katella, which captured the league championship with 218 points.

In the Garden Grove League finals:

Haspedales wins two--Garden Grove's Chris Haspedales won the 200 in 23.6 and was named athlete of the meet. Haspedales also won the 400 in 51.6.

In Freeway League girls' track and field finals:

Troy edges Sunny Hills--Troy finished second in the dual-meet campaign but scored 144 points in the league finals to edge runner-up Sunny Hills (121). Buena Park's Heather Garritson was named athlete of the meet after winning the 800 (2:26.12), 1,600 (5:13), and 3,200 (11:42.38).

In the Empire League finals:

Katella wins again--Jill Santibanez won the 800 (two minutes, 27.5 seconds), the 1,600 (5:22.1) and the 3,200 (11:43.7 for Katella which captured its second consecutive league championship. Melissa Price won the shot put (38 feet, 3 1/2 inches) and the discus (127-10) for Loara.

In the Garden Grove League finals:

Whalstrom wins four events--Kim Whalstrom finished first in the 400 (1:02.6), 800 (2:23.0) and both the 400 and 1,600 relays for Pacifica. Whalstrom was named the athlete of the meet.
