VALLEY NEWSWATCH

May 13, 1997|Sharon Bernstein and David Colker

Bike Power: Those Glendale cops on bikes might be faster than they look. The department is putting five new electric bikes into service, each custom made for law enforcement. . . . With a flick of a switch, the bikes give officers a boost of up to 18 mph. They even have sirens and flashing lights.

Fire Fliers: The DC-4s based at the U.S. Forest Service's air tanker base in Lancaster haven't carried passengers for years. Instead, these workhorses have been modified to zoom low over smoldering brush and drop fire retardant. . . . From June through December, they fight dry-season wildfires throughout the Western states (a page of photos, B14).

Beautiful People: Who are the beautiful among us? One measure comes from People magazine's recent issue listing the 50 most beautiful people. . . . It cited two from the Valley: Lisa Kudrow, who plays the ditsy Phoebe on NBC's "Friends" and grew up in Tarzana, and Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr., also from Tarzana.
