May 15, 1997|From Associated Press

OAKLAND — Jose Canseco and Matt Stairs each homered twice and Mark McGwire added his 13th homer as the Oakland Athletics snapped a seven-game losing streak Wednesday night with a 7-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Canseco and McGwire hit consecutive solo shots in the third inning, the 10th time they have hit back-to-back home runs. In the fourth, Canseco followed Stairs' two-run blast with his eighth home run.

Stairs added a solo shot in the seventh, his fifth, for his first multi-homer game.

McGwire snapped a 25-at-bat homerless streak that was his longest such drought since 1994.

Ariel Prieto (3-2) gave up two runs and six hits before leaving after 6 1/3 innings because of mid-back spasms.

Cal Eldred (4-4) gave up six runs and nine hits in six innings for the Brewers. He gave up four home runs, tying his career high.

Jose Valentin hit a two-run homer in the ninth and drove in three runs for the Brewers. Matt Mieske had a run-scoring double for Milwaukee, extending his hitting streak to seven games.

McGwire gave the Athletics a 1-0 lead in the first with a run-scoring single, and the consecutive solo shots made it 3-0 in the third. McGwire's homer to center went 410 feet.

The Brewers are only 5-10 on the road this season, 14-6 at home.
