Saving Pesos

May 18, 1997

I was happy to read "Canyon Country" on Mexico's Copper Canyon by Dan Leeth (April 6). Last October I went on a week's trip covering the same area with my sister-in-law and her three children. We took the risk of not making reservations for the Chihuahua al Pacifico train or for lodging in Creel and Batopilas. The first-class train from Chihuahua to Creel cost 140 pesos ($20) per adult. There were plenty of seats available.

When we arrived in Creel, we stayed at the Hotel Margarita, which charged our group 375 pesos for the room, which included two meals. We also visited Batopilas with similar low-priced accommodations and food. And, unlike the author, we were able to find the woman who keeps the key to the Lost Cathedral at Satevo. Its unusual construction features three domes and four half-domes connected by a vaulted ceiling. Flagstones cover the resting places of several padres.

The entire trip, outside of round-trip air fare from LAX to El Paso, cost me only $300, and I had a great adventure.
