Scott Moser of Huntington Beach High set a state high school record in the discus Wednesday at the Salinas Throwers Meet.
Moser, who in March recorded the state's second-best throw at a dual meet against Edison High, threw the discus 213 feet 11 inches to break Brian Blutreich's 1985 record of 210-8. Blutreich is a former Olympian who graduated from Capistrano Valley High.
According to Moser's coach, Tony Ciarelli, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior set the record on his second attempt in Salinas. Last year, Moser won the state discus championship with a throw of 185-7. The national high school record is 225-2, set in 1987 by Kamy Keshmiri of Reno (Nev.) High.
The Salinas Throwers meet is reserved for discus throwers, Ciarelli said. Moser, who will attend UCLA in the fall, will compete Saturday at the Southern Section Division I track and field finals at Cerritos College.
