Senate Panel OKs CSU Start-Up Funds

May 23, 1997|RICHARD WARCHOL

A state Senate budget subcommittee has approved $607,000 in additional start-up funds for a proposed state university campus in Ventura County.

The recommended appropriation adds to $1 million already earmarked to study the conversion of Camarillo State Hospital into a four-year public university.

The funds must still be approved by Gov. Pete Wilson and the Legislature when budget hearings begin in early June.

The additional funds were approved by the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Education. Sen. Jack O'Connell, who represents parts of Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, is the subcommittee's chairman.

"Crafting California's yearly budget, especially for education, is a long and complicated process, and it's not over yet," O'Connell said. "But I'm optimistic we can protect the money for the Channel Islands campus and ensure that Ventura County gets its fair share of capitol outlay funds for higher education."
