Train Derailment Prompts Evacuation

May 24, 1997|Associated Press

MARTINEZ, Calif. — Fourteen Santa Fe train cars--possibly carrying gas--derailed Friday, forcing the evacuation of residents in the area.

The tankers tumbled off the rails near California 4 about 5:30 p.m. as the 50-car train turned a bend in Franklin Canyon in the east San Francisco Bay Area community, Contra Costa County authorities said.

No injuries were reported.

Residents within a half-mile radius of the area were evacuated as a precaution while officials tried to determine if any of the tankers were leaking gas or other potentially hazardous materials.

At least two tankers appeared to be leaning against a home.
